Heather Johnson is a native of Muncie, Indiana. She was a student of Fred Ehnes for nine years before attending The Curtis Institute of Music at age seventeen.
She has attended several music festivals, including Tanglewood, Interlochen, Eastern Music Festival, Ashlawn-Highland Opera Festival, and Banff. Her other teachers include Glenn Dodson, Froydis Wekre, David Wick, William Purvis, Janine Gaboury-Sly and Dennis Abelson. Her ensemble experiences include the Philadelphia Ballet, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Columbus Symphony (OH), Charleston Symphony (SC), Jupiter Symphony (NY) and the Philadelphia Big Brass.
She also held a contract position with the Traverse Symphony (MI) as associate principal horn for six years. While in Michigan she appeared on television and radio frequently as a soloist and maintained a private teaching studio. She is newly arrived to Western Pennsylvania and is freelancing in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Cleveland. She lives there with her husband, a Juilliard-trained doublebassist and Luthier. She continues to teach and freelance extensively.
